Coconut Oil and Thyroid Problems


Many people today show underactive thyroid symptoms, both women as well as in men.  In fact, some medical researchers think we have an undiagnosed epidemic of thyroid problems in America.  Buty did you know that some people have experienced the reduction or even elimination of these symptoms by adding coconut oil to their diets?

As you may have already read on our website, virgin coconut oil - also known as VCO, and even a high quality expeller pressed coconut oil, has helped many people to increase their energy, body temperatures, metabolism and even weight loss.  This is because coconut oil contains high levels of the medium chain fatty acids (MCFAs), especially lauric acid, and these MCFAs are well known in their ability to boost metabolism as well as raise low body temperatures. 

Many health care practitioners with experience using coconut oil with their patients who have underactive thyroid symptoms suggest taking 1 - 4 Tablespoons per day.  The more you weigh, the more you may need consume to get good results.  Many practitioners recommend starting with just 1 tablespoon, especially if you have other health issues, as the MCFAs in the coconut oil are also anti-microbial, and sometimes you can have die-off of those bad bugs, and that can cause annoying symptoms like nausea, headaches and fatigue.  If you feel OK after a week or two with 1 Tablespoon of coconut oil per day, but don’t think it is doing anything for your thyroid symptoms yet (or not enough), try 2 tablespoons for another week or two. 

Many recommend trying to consume 3-4 tablespoons of either virgin coconut oil or a high quality expeller pressed coconut oil daily, for at least a month, to see if it will help.  Many natural ways of boosting your health can take longer than a pill.  If you still have no change, you might want to check our list below of things that you may need to eliminate in order to help boost your thyroid function:
 

Other Ideas for Reducing Underactive Thyroid Symptoms and Boosting Energy & Metabolism


Even though this is a website about the benefits of coconut oil, we would be remiss in not telling you about some of the common causes of thyroid problems, as addressing these issues are also important, in addition to adding some coconut oil to your diet.

1)  Low Iodine Intake:  It is well known that low iodine intake can cause thryoid problems, so well known that iodine is added to common table salt.  However, this salt is highly refined, and devoid of other minerals, and the type of iodine added is not easily used by the body.  You may need more iodine.  We highly recommend adding seaweed or a seaweed supplement to your diet.

2)  Goitrogens - or Iodine Blockers:  There are several commonly eaten foods that act as goitrogens or iodine blockers in the body, and they need to be avoided in large quantities:

  • Soybeans and Soy Oil - commonly found in prepared and packaged foods.  Often when the package says vegetable oil, this oil is soy oil.
  • Raw Cruciferous Vegetables - We know these are touted as being good for your health, and in some ways they certainly are.  but if you are suffering from thyroid problems, you might want to cook all your cruciferous vegetables, like broccoli, cauliflower and brussels sprouts.
  • Peanuts and Peanut Butter
  • Vegetable Oil - vegetable oil can block the secretion of thyroid hormones as well as affect the response of various tissues to those hormones.  This may be because most vegetable oil is refined, and this often causes rancid trans fats to be present. The rancid fats can impair the conversion of T4 to T3, and this in turn causes thyroid symptoms.

While you are trying to improve your thyroid symptoms, you might want to avoid these foods altogether.

3)  Certain Environmental Toxins, Including Fluoride, Mercury and Pesticides Have Been Linked To Thyroid Problems.  If your water is fluoridated, you might want to put a fluoride filter on it, and try to avoid putting more mercury (“silver” amalgam fillings) in your mouth, at least.  Both seaweed and whey protein can help boost your body’s detoxification of heavy metals like mercury.  So can leafy green vegetables and juicing.  Your lawn and garden can be taken care of quite well without the use of toxic, synthetic pesticides, that cause many other problems in addition to thyroid symptoms.
